Glia Workshop, Nordic Neuroscience 2019 satellite

This workshop will bring together expert researchers studying non-neuronal cells in the brain in health and disease in an interactive meeting format that promotes the latest work in the field. The number of studies of glia have seen a tremendous increase of activity and interest in the last five years, with large numbers of new researchers entering the field driven by the development of new technologies and genetic tools that allow the understanding of molecular mechanisms and visualisation of glial cells in the context of the brain. The workshop will highlight the latest research by including invited speakers and will bring together researchers with diverse technical and scientific expertise to stimulate interdisciplinary research and will feature ample opportunity for informal interaction among participants.

09.00-09.30 Transmitophagy: Astrocyte-mediated Degradation of Neuronal Mitochondria. Katja Kanninen, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio

09.30-10.00 Myelin plasticity in chronic stress, Iiris Hovatta, University of Helsinki

10.00-10.00 Pharmacology of glymphatic system Tuomas Lilius, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

10.30-11.15 The astroglial response to pathogenic proteins Anna Erlandsson, Uppsala University, Sweden

11.15-12.00 Panel discussion of the prospects of glial research. Panelists include Gonçalo Castelo-Branco (Karolinska Institutet, Sweden), Thora Karadottir (University of Cambridge, UK), Anna Erlandsson (Uppsala Universitet, Sweden).
